Choosing a BYOK AI video tool — six checks you can run in ten minutes (byok ai video tool)
Choosing a BYOK AI video tool: six checks you can run in ten minutes
Long-tail: byok ai video tool · bring your own key ai video · ai video tool byok · use your own api key for video
Every other landing page says "BYOK" now, and it can mean anything from "keys encrypted locally, sent straight to the provider" to "keys uploaded to our servers, we call on your behalf". The difference lands on your bill, your privacy and your migration cost.
All six checks below are verifiable during a ten-minute trial — no privacy-policy reading needed to filter out most of the field.
1. Where the key lives, and how
- Pass: encrypted at rest, plaintext held by the OS keychain (macOS Keychain / Windows DPAPI / Linux libsecret), UI shows only "configured".
- Fail: plaintext in a config file, readable by the renderer, or a web form asking you to paste it in.
PolyCreator encrypts with Electron safeStorage; plaintext exists in main-process memory only for the moments around a request. The renderer never sees it. Details: What is BYOK.
2. Whose servers the key passes through
- Pass: requests go from your machine straight to the provider; the tool vendor's servers never see the key.
- Fail: keys upload to the vendor, which calls on your behalf — that is "vendor holds the key, you pay the bill", not BYOK.
How to check: watch the request host once. If your key rides a TLS connection to the vendor's domain, it is not BYOK.
3. Model coverage and switching cost
- Pass: swapping providers on the same task, without rebuilding the flow.
- Fail: models hard-wired into features; changing provider means redoing the work.
PolyCreator picks the model per task on each canvas node — swapping a provider edits one node, not the canvas.
4. Whether you can cap the bill
- Pass: metered billing on the provider side, so your own quotas and budget alerts cut it off.
- Fail: prepaid credits are the only door, or the tool charges through without a ceiling.
PolyCreator holds no credits: you fund the provider, PolyCreator only calls it.
5. Data path and retention
- Pass: assets on your disk; only the necessary inputs go to the provider per generation; the vendor stores nothing.
- Fail: assets upload to the vendor's cloud first and are forwarded from there.
How to check: go offline and open the canvas — if the assets are still there, they live locally.
6. Export and portability
- Pass: ordinary files (png / mp4 / wav) and a flow that exports as readable configuration.
- Fail: outputs locked inside cloud projects; leaving the platform loses them.

FAQ
Is BYOK always cheaper than a subscription?
No. For light use a subscription wins; BYOK's advantage is pay-for-what-you-use plus model freedom, not an absolute discount.
What if my provider is not on the supported list?
The plugin SDK lets you write the provider adapter yourself (plugin template); not listed does not mean unsupported.
Do keys from different providers overwrite each other?
No — they are stored per provider, independently.
