PolyCreator vs Runway — subscription cloud models vs a reusable generation pipeline (runway alternative)
PolyCreator vs Runway: all-in-one cloud models, or a pipeline you can keep
Long-tail: runway alternative · runway vs polycreator · runway too expensive · how to choose an ai video tool
Runway is the reference product for cloud AI video: models are Runway's own, you work in the browser, and a subscription hands out credits. PolyCreator takes a different route: a desktop canvas that breaks generation into nodes, with models reached through BYOK straight from your own provider keys — and the canvas itself living on your machine.
They answer different questions. Runway hands you "one platform's full model shelf"; PolyCreator hands you "a pipeline you can save and rerun".

The one-line verdict
- Want it working now, subscription billing, a team collaborating in the browser → Runway.
- Want pay-as-you-go, your own keys, and storyboard → stills → shots kept as a reusable workflow → PolyCreator.
Comparison
| Aspect | PolyCreator | Runway |
|---|---|---|
| Form | Desktop canvas (macOS / Windows / Linux) | Cloud workbench in the browser |
| Billing | BYOK pay-per-use to your provider; plans described on the pricing page | Subscription credits (see the official pricing page) |
| Model source | The providers you choose, keys direct; text can run on local Ollama | Runway's own models |
| Assets & project files | Canvas and media on your disk; generation requests go straight to the provider | Media uploads into Runway's cloud projects |
| Pipeline reuse | The canvas is the file: storyboards, prompts, node params save as templates | Project-level organisation; reuse across projects is manual |
| Extensibility | Plugin SDK is open source (MIT) — nodes, toolbar actions, provider adapters | No bring-your-own or third-party model access |
Which one fits
Choose Runway when
- You already carry a steady subscription budget and would rather not manage several provider keys and quotas.
- Collaboration happens in the browser and a shared watch link is the deliverable.
- You need quick one-shot generation, not a saved production process.
Choose PolyCreator when
- You want to pay for what you use; BYOK puts the bill on the provider side, not in prepaid credits you may never spend.
- Your output is "a storyboard → a set of stills → a set of shots" and the sequence must be saved and rerun.
- Key custody matters: PolyCreator stores provider keys encrypted in the OS keychain and never proxies them through its own servers (see BYOK security).
They compose: PolyCreator can generate the material and storyboard, with any cloud model as one node's backend; the final cut then goes to an editor. The tools are not mutually exclusive.

FAQ
What happens when Runway credits run out?
You buy more or move up a tier per their pricing page; credits renew with the cycle. PolyCreator has no credit concept of its own: which provider you use and how much you fund it is decided on the provider side.
Can PolyCreator call Runway's models directly?
Video backends depend on whether an adapter exists; providers are wired through the built-in catalog or a plugin. If a vendor is missing, the plugin SDK lets you write the adapter (plugin template).
Do assets upload to PolyCreator's servers?
No. Canvas and media stay on your machine; generation requests go from your key straight to the provider. polycreator.si handles accounts, the plugin marketplace and downloads only.
